Odell Beckham
Odell Beckham Signing one-year deal in Miami
Fri, May 3, 2024, 10:33 AM
Beckham is signing a one-year contract with the Dolphins, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: It's a $3 million contract that can go up to $8.25 million with incentives, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com. Beckham signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Baltimore last offseason, and while his numbers were solid on a per-route and per-target basis, he never reached even 60 percent snap share after Week 1. He won't have to play too many snaps in Miami, where Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are the top WRs and head coach Mike McDaniel uses FB Alec Ingold a lot. The Dolphins had three or more WRs on the field for just 48 percent of their plays last year, the third-lowest rate in the league. On the other hand, Hill and Waddle tend to come off the field more often than other top receivers, which should give Beckham some chances to contribute in two-wide sets. Still, he's unlikely to have value in most fantasy leagues unless Hill or Waddle is unavailable (and even then it wouldn't necessarily be a sure thing).
Jaylen Waddle
Jaylen Waddle Miami picks up fifth-year option
Mon, Apr 29, 2024, 2:40 PM
The Dolphins officially exercised Waddle's fifth-year option Monday.
Analysis: Miami has made no secret of plans to pick up Waddle's fifth-year option this offseason, and the move is now official prior to Thursday's deadline. That keeps the third-year standout under contract for two more seasons and provides the Dolphins more time to negotiate a long-term deal with Waddle. The team added depth to the wideout room in the form of late-round rookies Malik Washington and Tahj Washington during the 2024 NFL Draft, but Waddle and Tyreek Hill remain the clear top targets for Tua Tagovailoa, with incumbents Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft available to split No. 3 duties.
De'Von Achane
De'Von Achane Bulks up during offseason
Wed, Apr 17, 2024, 10:53 AM
Achane appears to have added muscle to his frame through his workouts earlier this offseason, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: A photo of Achane showing up for OTAs went viral, with some saying he looks much larger than he did during his rookie campaign. It's his second offseason bulking up for football without also considering track and field, though at this point it's unclear how much muscle he's added relative to his weight from the 2023 NFL Combine, where he ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at 188 pounds. Achane averaged 7.8 yards per carry and scored a touchdown per game last season, albeit with injuries (six missed games) and Raheem Mostert's presence (209 carries) limiting the rookie to 103 carries and 27 catches in his 11 appearances. The Dolphins still have Mostert under contract -- along with backups Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed (foot) and Chris Brooks -- but they'll presumably prepare Achane with more of the backfield work in his second NFL season.
Jaylen Waddle
Jaylen Waddle Fifth-year option to be exercised
Tue, Apr 16, 2024, 12:29 PM
General manager Chris Grier said Tuesday that he expects the Dolphins to pick up Waddle's fifth-year option, Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The Dolphins have consistently stated a desire to come to terms with Waddle on a long-term contract, and Grier specifically dismissed trade rumors earlier this offseason. The third-year pro has recorded three straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, becoming the first wideout to do so in franchise history, and there's little question of his value as a No. 2 read behind Tyreek Hill. Picking up Waddle's fifth-year option will keep him under contract with the Dolphins for two more seasons.
Raheem Mostert
Raheem Mostert Re-works deal with Miami
Fri, Mar 29, 2024, 3:15 PM
The Dolphins and Mostert have agreed to terms on a re-worked deal that includes an extension through the 2025 season, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mostert's new deal with the Dolphins is worth up to $9.1 million over two years. The running back, who turns 32 next month, is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he ran for 1,012 yards on 209 carries in 15 regular-season games, while combining for 21 TDs (18 rushing and three receiving). This coming season, Mostert is set to reprise his key role in a Miami backfield that also includes dynamic 2023 third-rounder De'Von Achane, as well as Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks.
River Cracraft
River Cracraft Staying in Miami
Wed, Mar 20, 2024, 8:40 PM
Cracraft announced on X/Twitter on Monday that he will re-sign with the Dolphins on Wednesday.
Analysis: Cracraft has spent the past two seasons with the Dolphins after working his way up from the practice squad early in the 2022 campaign. While the 6-foot wideout had some notable single-gme performances in the first two games of the 2022 regular season, he's totaled just 18 catches for 223 yards and three touchowns over the past two years. he's also regularly dealt with injuries which have limited him to just 21 appearances over this span. Expect Cracraft to once again compete with Erik Ezukanma for a role behind starting wideouts Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Braxton Berrios.
Braxton Berrios
Braxton Berrios Returns to Miami
Sat, Mar 16, 2024, 3:25 PM
Berrios signed a one-year contract worth up to $3 million with the Dolphins on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPNreports.
Analysis: Berrios tallied just seven receptions for 44 yards over the Dolphins' final nine contests, which is surprising given he played at minimum 40 percent of the offensive snaps in every contest. Expect the veteran to primarily be the team's return man once again, a role that allowed him to tally 676 total return yards last season.
Jody Fortson
Jody Fortson Inking in Miami
Thu, Mar 14, 2024, 2:55 PM
The Dolphins are signing Fortson (shoulder) to a contract Thursday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Fortson spent the entire 2023 season on injured reserve with the Chiefs after undergoing shoulder surgery, but he should be healthy by the time Miami's offseason activities begin. A fifth-year pro capable of contributing as a rotational piece, Fortson will provide depth for the Dolphins behind Durham Smythe and fellow offseason addition Jonnu Smith.
Salvon Ahmed
Salvon Ahmed Staying with Miami
Wed, Mar 13, 2024, 8:11 AM
Ahmed (foot) agreed Wednesday with the Dolphins on a one-year contract, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: The 25-year-old running back has played in 38 games over four seasons since catching on with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2020, taking 163 carries for 593 yards (3.6 YPC) and five touchdowns and adding 40 catches for 274 yards and another score on 57 targets. Ahmed mostly saw playing time in obvious passing situations in 2023 before a foot injury ended his season in November. The Dolphins haven't provide an update on his recovery or revealed whether he needed surgery. In any case, Ahmed will compete for a depth role during training camp and the preseason.
Durham Smythe
Durham Smythe Restructures deal, new competition
Tue, Mar 12, 2024, 11:34 AM
Smythe restructured his contract with the Dolphins on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Smythe is one of a number of Miami players to agree to restructured contracts ahead of the start of the new league year, freeing up some much-needed cap space for the team. As the Dolphins' top tight end last season, Smythe remained a plus blocker but finished with just a 35-366-0 receiving line, leading to the team's decision to bring in Jonnu Smith, a superior pass catcher with real YAC ability. That signing could spell the end of Smythe's brief run as a tight end with low-end fantasy appeal, though he and Smith do seem likely for a true split of offensive snaps. With Atlanta last season, Smith managed a 50-582-3 receiving line while competing with Kyle Pitts.
Jonnu Smith
Jonnu Smith Going to Miami on two-year deal
Thu, Mar 7, 2024, 12:41 PM
Smith and the Dolphins agreed to terms Thursday on a two-year contract worth up to $10 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Smith provides Miami with a pass-catching complement to blocking specialist Durham Smythe at the tight end position, giving this offense another layer in the receiving game alongside wideouts Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Last season with Atlanta, Smith logged a career-best 50-582-3 receiving line on 70 targets, while working alongside Kyle Pitts. Heading into his age-29 season, Smith could be an under the radar fantasy stash due to his speed and potential fit in coach Mike McDaniel's offensive scheme, especially if he's able to establish himself as the Dolphins' clear starting tight end.
Jaylen Waddle
Jaylen Waddle Wanted long-term in Miami
Wed, Feb 28, 2024, 1:10 PM
General manager Chris Grier said Wednesday that the Dolphins have "no thoughts of trading [Waddle]," Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Grier dismissed recent rumors of Waddle being a trade candidate, saying "he'll be around here for a long time." Teammate Tyreek Hill recently weighed in on social media to dispel talk about such a trade, as did Waddle himself, so it's unsurprising to see the Dolphins' brass take a similar stance. The third-year pro recently became the first wideout in Miami's history to record three straight 1,000-yard seasons, posting a 72-1,014-4 receiving line across 14 regular-season games in 2023. Waddle has one more year on his rookie deal, plus a potential fifth-year option, giving the Dolphins plenty of time to negotiate a long-term contract.
Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa Optimism about extension
Wed, Feb 28, 2024, 12:15 PM
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Tuesday that he "absolutely" wants Tagovailoa to sign a contract extension this offseason, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The lefty quarterback is set to play out the 2024 season under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, after leading the league in yards per attempt in 2022 (8.9) and total passing yards in 2023 (4,624). Tagovailoa hasn't quite progressed to fantasy stardom despite his success, as he doesn't offer much in the way of rushing production, missed four games in 2022 and then saw Miami running backs rush for 27 of the team's 57 offensive touchdowns in 2023. He still has a path to QB1 value -- at least on the low end -- while throwing passes to elite receiving talents in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in one of the NFL's best-designed offenses. Early reports suggest both the Dolphins and Tagovailoa expect an extension to get done this offseason.
Mike White
Mike White Cap decisions coming in offseason
Fri, Feb 9, 2024, 1:20 PM
White completed five of six pass attempts for 74 yards with one touchdown and one interception across six regular-season appearances in 2023. He also rushed eight times for a loss of nine yards.
Analysis: White wasn't called upon to do much as Miami's backup behind Tua Tagovailoa, mostly entering games late in the fourth quarter in contests where the Dolphins were simply running out a large lead. He remains under contract with Miami for the 2024 campaign, but the team has a potential 'out' for only a $1.7 million cap hit, whereas White will otherwise cost a significant $5.2 million against the cap. It wouldn't be surprising to see both sides agree on a restructure in the coming months, if there's mutual interest in remaining together.
Cedrick Wilson
Cedrick Wilson Decisions coming this offseason
Thu, Jan 18, 2024, 3:33 AM
Wilson secured three of seven targets for 37 yards during Saturday's season-ending wild-card playoff loss to the Chiefs.
Analysis: Wilson drew his highest target total of the 2023 campaign during Miami's sole playoff appearance, capping a stretch run in which his involvement on offense grew, despite lacking a notable uptick in production. Across 15 regular-season appearances, the 28-year-old wideout secured 17 of 38 targets for 296 yards and three touchdowns, better marks across the board than his 2022 season (also 15 games played). Wilson has emerged as a serviceable No. 3 option behind the dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but due to the contract restructure he signed back in August, as Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com reports, his deal will now void automatically void this offseason. It's possible, though, that Miami could pursue re-signing Wilson to a team-friendly deal.
Jeff Wilson
Jeff Wilson Quiet in wild-card loss
Tue, Jan 16, 2024, 4:58 PM
Wilson secured one of two targets for six yards during the Dolphins' 26-7 wild-card loss to the Chiefs on Saturday.
Analysis: Wilson had a fittingly quiet end to an underwhelming 2023 campaign, in which across 10 regular-season appearances he racked up 188 rushing yards on 41 attempts (4.6 average), plus 14 catches for 85 yards on 17 targets. Despite missing the first six games of the season while on IR and seeing a substantial downtick in total production, largely due to the dominance of Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane, Wilson's end-of-year efficiency metrics still stand out, and his versatility makes him a valuable depth piece for Miami. However, the Dolphins have a potential 'out' in his deal this offseason for only $782,500 in dead cap, meaning that in order to stay with the team Wilson will likely have to negotiate a restructure.
Anthony Schwartz
Anthony Schwartz Nabs reserve/future deal with Miami
Mon, Jan 15, 2024, 6:39 PM
The Dolphins signed Schwartz to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Analysis: Schwartz played with the Browns in each of his first two NFL seasons, recording 14 catches on 33 targets for 186 yards and a touchdown over 25 games and adding 96 yards and a touchdown on 10 rushes. He also worked as a kick returner in his rookie campaign, recording 322 yards in that role. The 2021 third-round draft pick suffered a hamstring injury during training camp last season and was eventually waived by Cleveland before joining Miami's practice squad in mid-November. He'll now have a chance to compete for a spot on the team's active roster during training camp this summer.
Braylon Sanders
Braylon Sanders Gets reserve/future deal from Miami
Mon, Jan 15, 2024, 6:26 PM
The Dolphins signed Sanders to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Analysis: Sanders was originally signed by Miami as an unrestricted free agent in 2022 and got into three contests that season, catching two of three targets for 17 yards over 32 offensive snaps. He remained with the Dolphins last year and spent the campaign on the organization's practice squad. Sanders will have another chance to work for a roster spot during training camp this summer.
Raheem Mostert
Raheem Mostert Shouldn't need ankle surgery
Mon, Jan 15, 2024, 10:42 AM
Mostert said Monday he doesn't expect to undergo surgery to address the ankle injury that hindered him down the stretch of the 2023 season, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: Mostert entered Saturday's 26-7 wild-card loss to the Chiefs nursing both knee and ankle injuries, but frigid weather conditions and an unfortunate game script limited him to eight carries for 33 yards. He also secured one of two targets for minus-3 yards. Looking ahead to his age-32 season, it's certainly encouraging that Mostert won't have to rehab from surgery, as he has yet to show signs of losing a step. Across 15 regular-season appearances, Mostert set a franchise record with 21 total scores while rushing for 1,012 yards on 209 carries (4.8 YPC). With one more season left on his two-year deal, the stage looks set for Mostert to once again headline one of the NFL's most efficient rushing attacks alongside De'Von Achane during the 2024 campaign.
Tyler Kroft
Tyler Kroft Ends 2023 season without a catch
Mon, Jan 15, 2024, 10:13 AM
Kroft was not targeted across eight regular-season appearances with the Dolphins in 2023.
Analysis: Kroft ended the 2023 campaign as a healthy scratch for Miami's final four games, including Saturday's wild-card playoff loss to the Chiefs. The veteran tight end had never previously finished a season without a catch. Now heading into his 10th NFL season off a forgettable one-year stint with the Dolphins, Kroft seems unlikely to draw interest as more than a depth option on the free agent market.
